That is the entire shift in mindset the predictive maintenance evaluation framework needs to make space for. Where predictive maintenance earns its keep Predictive maintenance does not save the failed part. It shifts the resolution out of the emergency column entirely — a turbo VGT actuator gets swapped on a planned load turn, a reefer compressor clutch handover is staged against a routine tech visit, an alternator is replaced before the next lessee run starts. The fix still happens. What disappears is the SLA exposure, the tow mile, the rental day, and the missed-load revenue, because the truck never parks unscheduled in the first place. The benefit, in other words, accrues against the hourly benchmark above — and that is the only comparison a fleet operator should make when evaluating a platform. Comparing predictive maintenance's value against the parts bill alone is the most common mistake in vendor pitches; the math only closes on the yard-hour side, and a platform that wins the savings estimate on the parts bill but loses on the yard-hour side is not actually saving the operator money, no matter how good the calldown looks on a quarterly deck. Right-to-repair, OEM-safe, and CvRP-aware postures also matter here: a platform that holds the data in a vendor-controlled wall cannot be audited, and an unauditable hour-saved figure is not a savings the operator can book against the same yard-hour column that the rest of finance agrees on. Pinning that comparison in writing, with the yard-hour number on one side of the column and the avoided-events ledger on the other, is the right way to evaluate any predictive platform for a Class 8 fleet.
